SCHNTZL is the playground of pianist Hendrik Lasure and drummer Casper van de Velde. They met each other when they were 12 and 14 years old and they haven’t stopped playing together since.
SCHNTZL is the constant search for the preservation of fragility: how can strict composition and free improvisation be combined? How do acoustic and electronic elements fit together? The unique minimalist way in which they answer these questions leaves enough space for silence and takes you to the essence of music. The constant interaction between both musicians on and off-stage results in a fresh, intimate palette of sounds, colors, images and vibrations in which free improvisation and composed parts go hand in hand and keep evolving non-stop.
In February 2015, the duo won the STORM!-contest for upcoming talent which resulted in a release on the W.E.R.F.-label and a JazzLab tour in 2016. In the summer of 2016 SCHNTZL won numerous awards including best composition and best instrumentalist at the Tremplin Jazz d’Avignon Contest.
Their electro-acoustic music conquered a lot of Belgian hearts these past years. By getting airplay on Radio 1 (BE), Studio Brussel and a broadcast on canvas.be, they reached a very diverse audience with different ages and backgrounds.
Since their debut SCHNTZL played over 50 concerts in Flanders, Wallonia, Germany and the Netherlands including Gent Jazz Festival, Brosella, Paradiso (support BADBADNOTGOOD) and Het Concertgebouw in Bruges. With highlight shows at Belgientag Paderborn (DE), inJazz Rotterdam (NL) and 12 Points Festival (DK), the duo has started building a strong reputation abroad.
SCHNTZL’s brand new EP Paper, Wind is scheduled for release in May 2018.
